Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question specific rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
